HOW IT IS FORMED
Calcite is a common part of sedimentary rock, like limestone, which are formed from the shells of marine organisms. It can be found inside the icicle-shaped deposits in underground caverns and forms in a variety of colors, including white, blue, green, and yellow.
HISTORY & LEGENDS
The Vikings used calcite for its power to tell the position of the sun on cloudy days. A clear calcite crystal was recovered from the 16th century ship, the Alderney, leading historians to believe this form of navigation may have been used long after the magnetic compass was invented.
